OK - I posted this rant about t-shirts and jeans in my blog (http://www.antishay.com) the other day and I've been thinking a lot about the "standard" suburban dress lately.
I think my problem is not that I don't LIKE jeans or t-shirts, it's just that the majority of people look like they care, but they don't care enough. I am finding this hard to describe.
For example, I was at Starbucks yesterday and I was looking at ALL the moms that were there for their 9AM coffee. Most of them looked OK, but like they were a little clueless. Take this one mom: beautiful long dark brown hair, great skin, great coloring... she was wearing flattering makeup, her hair in a blowout, with a manicure and a Coach tote. So she obviously knows how to do her makeup and hair, and how to have an adorable bag that goes with her coloring, etc.. She was not overweight by any means. She was WEARING, though, ill-fitting tapered-at-the-ankle AND pleated jeans with an elastic waist (nonononooo!) with an over-sized t-shirt and a "fitted" fleece which was too small for her and so she had it unzipped. On top of all this, she was wearing blindingly white unflattering orthopedic sneakers.
Whyyyyy!??
This is one example to clarify my point, but all the moms were like this (moms or not, they looked like soccer moms). But they were all young! And they all clearly had money ($50k SUVs, $400 handbags, and professional manicures that I'm sure they get every week). If they have the cash, or even if they really don't... ugh.
This mom, for example, that I was going on about above... she could have been just as comfortable in stretch pinstriped flat-fronted pants from Old Navy (I'm sure they cost like $25) and a nice sweater or cartigan/camisole duo. She would have looked very impressive and on top of things, but instead she was just bleh.
This is, I think, the problem with fashion in the majority of America. It's not about money, and it's certainly not about age or marital status or kid status. It's about ignorance and cluelessness. It's like all these women just look at their wardrobes and think "... I just don't know." And then they go out to look at clothes to make things better and while shopping they feel the SAME WAY.
I hope maybe with my blog I can reach some women who want help with their wardrobes. I can give advice! And I'm good at it.
I don't think that someone is BAD or at ALL dumb because they can't dress themselves. Look at pictures of me from six years ago! I hadn't a clue. But I decided to start caring and start spending, and now my wardrobe is amazing and I finally KNOW what I'm doing.
And I think that's what it's all about |

You have a great site there! I think pants vs. skirts really depends on the situation and how well one can pull it off. Full-length skirts are simple and easy, but if it's like, short skirts, no thanks. Pants are always the way to go, they're simple and classy in my opinion. |

I think you have a point there. However, long skirts usually make people look bad. They're a lot harder to pull off than a shorter skirt. Mini skirts are a whole other lesson, but knee-length and just-above-knee-length skirts are flattering on all body types - you just have to wear the right cut. Big women should wear straight skirts, skinny women can wear most anything but the best cuts are a-line and poofy. I'm somewhere in the middle and the best skirts for me are ones that have a tight wide waistband and then go OUT in like a triange shape with loads of fabric. I always look way thinner than I am in these skirts, and the length (just-above-knee) makes my legs look great.
I guess I just prefer skirts. I have a few pairs of dress pants which I love as well, but I still only wear them rarely. |

| I agree to some degree. The only time you wear jeans if they are the right fit and by NO means will i ever get pleated, elastic banded jeans. Skirts is the fashionable and classy decision. The only skirts that should be boxed and shipped far away are the very short mini skirts. Some women have no self dignity when it comes to dressing. |
